Well known and well respected all over the world, the Bordeaux wine region offers a wide range of wines spanning brands, chateaus, and Grands Crus with a global reputation.
Located in south-western France, Bordeaux’s vineyards cover more than 110,000 hectares. It is influenced by a temperate oceanic climate and the two rivers flowing through the region: the Garonne and the Dordogne. Its wines have an ‘Appellation d’Origine Protégée’ (protected designation of origin) that requires compliance with a strict set of specifications that governs the winemaking process.
Made primarily from the Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties, the appellation allows for wines in three colours (primarily red at 85% of volume, then white – both dry and sweet – and rosé) and even sparkling wines with Crémant de Bordeaux. There are 65 appellations for Bordeaux wines, and the ‘Bordeaux & Bordeaux Supérieur’ appellation represents 44% of the annual volume.
